ChatGPT Plus for $5 a Month? I Checked Every Cheaper Option
Six options, real checkout prices, and the catches nobody puts in the headline.
Disclosure: this post contains a referral link. If you buy through it, I earn a small commission. It doesn't change what you pay, and I've tried to be blunt about the downsides.
Twenty dollars a month doesn't sound like much. Then you add Netflix, Spotify, iCloud and whatever else quietly renews on the 1st, and ChatGPT Plus starts to look like the easiest thing to cut.
Before cutting it, I wanted to know what the cheaper routes actually cost. Not the "up to 80% off!" numbers on landing pages, but the totals that show up at checkout. So I went through OpenAI's pricing page and clicked through to the last step on a resale site. All prices are in US dollars.
The short version
| Option | Per month | Catch |
|---|---|---|
| Free plan | $0 | Ads, limits on images, voice and memory |
| ChatGPT Go | $8 | Ads, no agent, no Codex, no top models |
| ChatGPT Plus (official) | $20 | Full price |
| Shared Plus seat (GamsGo) | about $5 | Breaks OpenAI's terms; chats not private |
| API + third-party app | pay per use | Setup needed; you lose app features |
| Business seats | $20 to $25 each | Not cheaper; 2 seats minimum |
1. The free plan is better than you remember
Free now includes unlimited everyday text chat. The limits bite on images, voice and memory, and you'll see ads. If you mainly ask quick questions or polish emails, give Free an honest month before you pay for anything.
2. ChatGPT Go: $8 and some ads
Go is OpenAI's budget plan. You get more messages, images, memory and voice than Free. You also get ads, and you miss the things that make Plus feel like Plus: the agent that works across your apps and files, Codex for coding, and the top models.
For a student writing essays and cramming for exams, Go is often enough.
3. Plus: boring, safe, $20
If ChatGPT is part of how you earn money or get your degree, $20 is probably fine. No ads, no sharing, no surprises. Everything below is about trading some of that safety for a lower price.
4. Business seats are not a loophole
I've seen people suggest grabbing a Business plan with a friend and splitting it. The math doesn't work. A standard Business seat is $25 a month, or $20 if you pay for a year, and you need at least two seats. That's Plus pricing with admin tools attached. Buy it for the team features, not to save money.
5. The API route: cheap for some, a trap for others
You can pay OpenAI per message through its API and chat in an app that accepts your own API key. If you send a handful of text prompts a week, this can come in well under $20. If you lean on it every day or generate images, it can cost more. You also lose the ChatGPT app itself: memory, voice mode, the agent. This one is for tinkerers.
6. Shared seats: about $5 a month, with strings attached
This is where the big discounts live. Sites like GamsGo sell you a seat on a Plus account that a few other people also use. I went through GamsGo's checkout to get the real numbers:
Two things jumped out. The six-month plan costs more per month than the three-month one, so "bigger is cheaper" is wrong here. And the private option costs more than buying Plus straight from OpenAI. Skip it.
Now the catches, because there are several:
- It breaks OpenAI's terms. OpenAI doesn't allow account sharing. If it shuts a shared account down, your access goes with it, paid or not.
- Your chats aren't private. Everyone on the seat logs into the same account. Don't paste in passwords, ID numbers, medical details or anything from work you wouldn't post publicly.
- Not every feature is promised. GamsGo's own product page says it doesn't guarantee Codex will work on this plan. If coding is why you want Plus, look elsewhere.
- Logins can break. Some Trustpilot reviews mention accounts that stopped working early. GamsGo sells an optional add-on, GamsCare+, that covers refunds for the full period.
If you still want to try it, start with one month. Use it for studying, writing and brainstorming, not for anything sensitive. Keep your order number in case you need support.
Here's my referral link: GamsGo ChatGPT Plus (shared seat). The code NDGAM takes another $0.18 off the one-month plan, which brings the auto-renew total down to $4.96. More on the code here.
So which one should you pick?
- You ask a few questions a day: Free.
- You're a student hitting Free's limits: Go, $8.
- You want Plus features on a tight budget, and nothing you type is sensitive: a shared seat, about $5.
- You code and you're comfortable with API keys: the API route.
- ChatGPT is part of your job: Plus, $20. Don't overthink it.
- You're buying for a team: Business.
Prices in this space change often, and I'll update this page when they do.
